Day 2: Windhoek to Etosha South

Begin your adventure with a scenic drive from Windhoek, traveling north through the stunning Namibian landscape. From Outjo, it’s a short drive to your accommodation near the Anderson Gate, located at the southern entrance to Etosha. n the afternoon, head into the Etosha National Park for your first self-guided game drive. This iconic park is known for its large salt pans and abundant wildlife, including elephants, giraffes, zebras, and a variety of antelope species. The Etosha Pan, a vast, shimmering white expanse, offers surreal views and the opportunity to see herds of elephants, rhinos, and antelopes, all gathered around the waterholes. Keep an eye out for predators such as lions and cheetahs, which are often seen lurking near the water, ready to pounce on unsuspecting prey.

Day 4: Etosha National Park

After a delicious breakfast, you’ll set off on your final game drive through the park. The park’s diverse landscapes and active waterholes promise exciting encounters with a wide variety of wildlife. Look out for large herds of elephants, graceful giraffes, and clusters of zebras, often seen at the park’s popular watering holes.

 

If you're lucky, you might spot some of the park's more elusive residents, like the cheetah or the endangered black rhino. Take your time to visit the Etosha Pan, an awe-inspiring salt flat that stretches for miles, offering dramatic scenery and a sense of vastness. As the day progresses, make your way toward the eastern sections of the park, where the landscape becomes more varied with dense vegetation and open savannah.

 

Before departing in the late afternoon, take one last opportunity to explore the park's waterholes, capturing the wildlife as the sun begins to dip lower in the sky. Remember, the gates of the park close at sunset, so ensure you leave plenty of time to exit and head toward your next destination. As you leave Etosha behind, you’ll drive eastward towards your accommodation, located near the Von Lindequist Gate, one of the park’s most scenic entrances.

Your route takes you south, passing through Tsumeb, a historic mining town known for its copper and zinc production. It’s an excellent stop to stretch your legs and take in the local charm.

 

If you have time, you might explore the Tsumeb Museum, which showcases the area’s mining history and fascinating mineral specimens. Continuing south, you’ll drive through the Otavi Mountains, where the landscape shifts from arid plains to lush, mountainous terrain. This area is known for its striking hills, abundant wildlife, and farming communities. The drive through these mountains offers stunning views, making it a perfect opportunity to pause for a photograph or simply enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

 

As you approach Windhoek, the terrain gradually transitions into the expansive plains that surround Namibia’s capital. Arriving in Windhoek, you’ll be welcomed back to the city by its unique blend of modernity and historical charm. The drive takes about 5 hours, providing a relaxing and scenic way to end your journey.

 

Once back in Windhoek, you can explore the city’s attractions, such as the Christuskirche or the National Museum of Namibia or simply unwind after your adventure. Whether you’re preparing to depart or continuing your Namibian adventure, the memories of your time in Etosha and the surrounding landscapes will stay with you long after the journey ends.

Day 6: Departure

On your final day in Windhoek, you have the option to either return your rental vehicle to the car rental depot or continue your journey through Namibia on your own arrangements. If you're returning the vehicle, after breakfast, you'll drive to the car rental depot where you'll complete the necessary paperwork and drop off your vehicle.

 

This is a smooth and straightforward process, ensuring that all your travel arrangements are in order before you depart. If you choose to continue your travels, you have the freedom to embark on your next adventure, whether it’s heading off to another destination in Namibia or exploring more of Windhoek and the surrounding areas.

 

You may decide to drive to nearby attractions like the charming town of Okahandja, known for its craft markets, or the majestic Waterberg Plateau with its rich wildlife and panoramic views. Alternatively, you might opt for a scenic drive to discover more of Namibia’s hidden gems at your own pace.
